Slackware 12.1 and firefox - file ticker screens too small

I am surprised that installing Slackware 12.1 has changed some of the firefox screens.

Does anyone know how that has happened?

How it can be corrected?

The screens for downloading or opening files now have a completely different format and are too small to read properly.

Firefox=2.0.0.14
Slackware=12.1
windowmanager=ratpoison

I have removed the slackware ready-installed version now, so that I am running exactly the same firefox set up as I did on slackware 10.1 but the problem persists.

Thus it is something that has changed in the slackware 11 or 12.

It is not just the size of the screen - but the layout has changed. How can the distro affect that?

Well, I did ldd on firefox-bin and compared that to an ldd on ff under 10.1.

There were dependencies on sea monkey libraries, and since they don't exist on my 10.1, I de-installed seamonkey (ff ran ok afterwards of course) and these are the existing dependencies left over - and one of them is responsible for that horrible open (and save) dialogue screen.

I learned a long time ago not to remove Mozilla/Seamonkey from Slackware. It seems a few things depend on them. Glad you got it figured out.

firefox on 12.1 seems to be using the gtk dialog and on 10.1 it seems to be using the qt dialog.

gleaned from the net:

No - there's a misunderstanding:

It has NOT been figured out.

The problem is with the FULL STANDARD installation:

The problem existed BEFORE removing Mozilla/Seamonkey - they were removed subsequently as part of my search for a resolution to this problem.

The problem is far from resolved.

To close this matter.

This issue shows the irritation of dependencies.

I don't give two (or even one) hoots about KDE, GNOME and their libraries GTK, QT etc. taking up space.

I am using Ratpoison and I just suddenly realised - after wasting so much time on this, that I don't even need the save or open file facilities of firefox, since I can carry out those tasks independent of the browser.

And it works better than firefox does it!

It would be interesting to know which library is producing that ugly and tiny open/save file dialogue in firefox - whereas in 10.1 the very same program (Firefox is always installed to my home directory) had a beautiful dialog.

Thanks to everyone for their input.

I know, from google, that this is, and will remain, an issue for other users so a solution would be good.

A program shouldn't change so much (almost as if the programme had been changed!) just because of an OS upgrade.

I think I have not yet talked to any Slacker who is not annoyed by the GTP file-open dialog. I guess the Gnomes like it.

You can get your old file-open dialog back if you configure firefox to disregard what the system tells it to use.
In the firefox address bar, type
Code:
about:config
Find the parameter ui.allow_platform_file_picker and set it's value to false.

Thumbs up Thanks Bob!

I did check out the config:about but I was scanning for file open etc.

Your suggestion worked, of course.

Back to sanity, at last.

Thanks again Eric.

ACK that! I didn't know it was so simple to change in FF. THANKS Alien Bob!

Can this be done for all GTK apps, e.g. Gimp? An Xresource setting perhaps? As long as I'm asking, can the GTK file dialog behavior be set to use single mouse clicks?

Is there a listing somewhere of Xresource entries?

Thanks!

Sometimes I'm really slow, and this must be one of them. On my fresh install
of Slackware-12.1 I don't seem to have this same issue. It might be because
I am using the same ~/.mozilla/ as I had before the fresh install. Anyhow,
here's a screenshot if someone can help enlighten me.
