Please forgive me if this has been answered elsewhere. I looked but didn't find it.
How much disk space do I need to allocate for a full install of 14.2? I will have a separate partition for personal files, music, etc, that gets shared between distros, so what I'm wondering is how much space is necessary for Slackware itself, including log files?
Install size of 14.2 is just under 10GBs. Log files can get really big, depending on how verbose your output is and any problems you might run into and whether or not you set up log rotations. But all programs you install from slackbuilds.org (commonly called SBo) will go to the same harddrive partition by default, so you'd need to make accommodations for that. I probably wouldn't recommend anything under 20GB unless you don't plan on installing much 3rd-party software.
Recently I completed a full 14.2 (stable) installation. 9.3GB with no home and no slackbuilds in.
Usually I keep the /home partition on a different disk and allocate 30-50GB for the system - on this specific laptop I left 50GB for /.
Historically I have never exceeded 20GB.
Typically on my systems I end up around 20GB for the root partition with a full install of Slackware64 + multilib + and a reasonable amount of SlackBuilds installed. I do software development so I required many SlackBuilds that the average user does not need. I think about a 15 GB root partition is expected for most people.
It can be paired down a lot if you do not include the kernel source, KDE or XFCE series (depending on your needs), the KDEI series (if you only need English language support), the E, F, and Y series. E, F, and Y are optional in my book since they are not necessary for a functional system (sorry Emacs users).
