First blog entry!

Posted 08-02-2008 at 05:56 AM by stople

I haven't blogged before, so I can start by writing about myself.

I am 18 years old, live on the west coast of Norway, and is a half educated electrician. I have been interested in computers since I was a kid (6 years maybe). My first computer was a 286/386 I'll guess (my dad's old computer). I don't remember much about this computer, but it did suffer a terrible death; me and two others did pick everything from each other in a terrible way (I still don't understand why...). My second computer is a 100 MHz 486, which I still have today... It was capable of win3.11 and win95, but had problems with win98. I haven't tried any linux os on the computer (I didn't know about linux then). I did program some qbasic programs with it (my first programming experience). My third one is a 2,8 GHz computer, which I bought when I was 14, and my fourth is a Acer Aspire laptop with a 1,83 GHz Core 2 Duo processor. I have used windows based OS's, until I have converted to Linux.

My first Linux experience was a project me and my cousin did in 2006. We installed Debian Etch on a server (we tried fedora first, but it didn't work). Then I installed a Counter-Strike server on it (pcfood.net). We were running 4 different servers on that computer (different mods; normal, gungame, wc3 and surf), but now we are running only 2. (At the moment it is no servers actually; the server have a hardware problem and won't even start...) The server were also a router to my cousin's private LAN. This reduced the ping on the Counter-Strike server compared to have the server connected to an ordinary router.

I was a bit skeptical to ubuntu linux at first; I thought it was a "noob linux" only, but I installed Gutsy on my brothers old computer, and he was very satisfied with it. Later on I installed it on my own laptop, and was satisfied myself. Later on I tried gentoo 2008.0, but it didn't work, so I installed ubuntu hardy. My 2,8 GHz is also running Hardy atm.

As previously written, my first programming experience was QBasic. I was maybe 10-12 years old. I did learn by reading working code on a game written by a friend of a friend of mine. My first programs was my own "hello world" programs based on this code. I have always learned things "myself"; either by trying until it work, and later by using google. Later on I evolved to using Visual Basic, which made GUI programs (compared to DOS programs). I wrote an encryption program that worked, which basically XORed the data with the password and the latest version did actually randomized the encryption by XORing it with random bytes which was appended to the output (this was actually a security flaw; this made it possible to crack the first byte of the password if you knew the algorithm). I also wrote a simple FTP program (a typically program that I never finished). I also wrote a program in Delphi (a time converter).

I have programmed HTML for a while; first by using namo webeditor, but now I only use a text editor. Me and my cousin have had multiple web projects; first 999on, which was an attempt to link to 999 online games. After that we made pcfood.tk where we published my visual basic programs. Later on we bought the domain pcfood.net. After a while we converted the use of PCFOOD.net to links to online games (similar to 999on), but now by using PHP; my new programming skill. (Yes, I am the "programmer" regarding me and my cousin). This project was then replaced with the current use of PCFOOD.net, which is gaming related (remember that we are running Counter-Strike servers?). This page is much better graphical experience, since a friend of my cousin made the layout instead of me :P . I also experimented with AJAX on this page. But I haven't touched the site for a while now...

Back to programming generally, the previous paragraph added html, php and ajax (javascript) to my CV. I have also some C and C++ experience. I haven't done some open source programming yet, but recently I downloaded the neverball source. I am currently hacking on it, trying to add an in-game map downloading service (similar to the debian package system). I have totally "seen the light" with linux and open source, and wish to program my future programs in open source only.
