xorg on Dell 6000 with 915GM "could not open default font 'fixed'"

Hi all,

I'm having a heap of trouble with a Dell 6000 laptop I recently acquired (typical of my experience with Dell laptops, actually).

I'm having trouble getting X to use my display. First, the Xorg.0.log:

Here is the output of lspci:

I have tried fiddling with the device driver (using i810 and vesa) to no avail. At the same time, I have a copy of SLAX 6.0.9 that autoconfigures X wonderfully . . . I've tried copying over the xorg.conf, but no dice. Am I missing something painfully obvious?

I gather that there are a lot of issues with this particular laptop, but I haven't been able to find any solid footholds on fixing it. Could someone please point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance,
Eupator

Hello eupator,
I found a link to a driver for this soundcard in rpm-format:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/down...stems&lang=eng
maybe it will help you.

Hello,

From your /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Quote:
Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'
Did you make a full installation of Slackware (in particular the font-* packages in x/ series)?

By the way, which version of Slackware are you using: 12.2?

Thanks for the replies!

That package appears to be a (dated) repackaging of the i915 packages here:

http://dri.freedesktop.org/snapshots/

neither of which compile for me. For the one obtained at freedesktop.org, the error log looks like this:

I am using slackware 12.2 with a self-compiled kernel. Yes, all the fonts are installed, just as everything else in the x series.

Solved!

I uninstalled and reinstalled the fonts packages, and everything started working. I'm not sure what went wrong with installation the first time, though . . .
