My Slackware 12.1 CDs came in the mail today:-) I've always downloaded my Slackware CDs for free either through bittorrent or direct download. This time I thought I should support Patrick.
If you haven't already done so please consider giving Patrick a donation or buy his product. This will ensure that our favourite OS remains vital and strong. I know this topic has been posted before, but, I'd like to put in a plug again for Patrick:-)

I agree, I bought a t-shirt recently, it's not much, but I wanted to support Slack. I thought a t-shirt might serve two purposes, support Slack, and get some questions about Slack when I wear it.

I wonder if slackware has a paypal address? Tbh, I don't need another CD on the self as it becomes 'obsolete' 6-12 months from now but I'd gladly donate some money.

Edit: On second thought, that slackware polo shirt wasn't there the last time I saw it

I have already emailed slackware about paypal and they currently do not accept it which is a shame as a quick link on their webpage and iam sure they wold get even more donations.

Buying stuff from Patrick or donating to him is secure using your credit card. Patrick is running a secure site.....this is Slackware we're talking about.
I bought my Slackware CDs using my credit card with no issues. You should be fine if your Slackware box is patched and you're behind a firewall of some type.

I'd like to believe that, but on the internet nothing is secure, only more or less secure. The only true statement would be the internet is not secure. But, statistically, you shouldn't have any problems, especially if the credit card company covers online losses.

Granted. Nothing on the Internet is perfectly secure, but, if you keep your Slackware box reasonably secure (patched, scan for rootkits, use a firewall) you should be okay. I'm willing to take a mild risk to support Pat.

Not every one owns what the Slackware store accepts as credit card. Those cards are not that familiar in Germany as it probably is in US and Canada

Visa and Master Card? Not accepted?

It's hard to make North Americans understand that in the rest of the world these credit cards are mainly for rich people. Here in Europe they are really not that popular.

So I totally agree with todders:

They are accepted at many stores but they are not in widespread use. We use something that is called "EC-card" (electronic cash) that has the same function. Sadly it's not compatible. If you want to pay with Visa or Master Card here you need an extra card that most of the times costs extra. And that has no special value here, because EC is accepted everywhere and you get it for free.

In the UK Visa/Mastercard are the norm and not just for the rich, though that may change a bit with the impending credit crunch.

Accepting paypal seems like a good idea though. My own web site accepts Mastercard/visa/amex and paypal. Paypal is the cheapeast and easiest to set up.

I am afraid my experience differs. I don't mean to hijack the thread, it is important (imo) to help get folks to contribute to the Slackware project, but I've had nothing but trouble getting open source shopping carts to play nice with PayPal gateways.

Without getting bogged down in detail, I'm a competent (some would say brilliant) developer, but I've thrown in the towel when it comes to open source carts and PayPal. I won't name names here but I had to switch from a commercial solution because my provider had some sort of meltdown and I tried various open source options.

I finally had to settle on another commercial solution to keep the storefronts operational. Even then, I had to enlist their support folks to help get the gateway for PayPal working. One patch later and we're up and running, with caveats.

Of course, the platform for all of this is Slackware!

We have opted to periodically purchase the Slackware CDs/DVDs rather than the more economical subscription for the thread-topic reason -- supporting the Slackware project. Add my voice to the throng yet again: thank you Patrick and the rest of the team.

There is something about threads like this that make me feel a bit uncomfortable. I know that the intentions are good, but I think we need to respect those that can't afford or choose not to buy Slackware, regardless of the reason. If PV wants, he can always eliminate the free download option (or offer paypal, though I believe there is a reason behind this). Until then, everyone needs to accept that there will be people who will opt for the "free as in beer" option and that they have every right to do so. I do not believe we have the right to judge anyone for making that choice.

I know that the intent here was not to judge. It may not translate that way for all folks.

If you feel that strongly that something needs to be said, then say it in your sig.
