Answering my own question: It looks like /usr/share/sddm/scripts/Xsession has commented out reading the $USER .xsession specifically to prevent duplicate dbus sessions.

So...why the dbus errors when using SDDM?

It works for me as well (editing post) I had failed to comment out the "start i3" part.

I still need to test if it still works when using SLiM

Edit: Yes, it works, even if I boot straight into X using SLiM, solved for me as well, after months of trying to figure it out. Thank you!

Thanks, but I didn't figure it out on my own. The answer was largely given in this post in the thread I linked earlier by @OXBF. I just tweaked it.

I've not been able to fix it with SDDM, but I'm fine using runlevel 3 anyway. I might give SLiM a try just for kicks though. Thanks.
