Hello! I just installed Slackware 9.0, with the install option where everything on the disk is put on the hard drive, the 2GB install.

That worked out quite well, i thought, i did a clean reboot, and Slack started right up!

I logged in as root, did "startx". The display did some funky stuff, flickering and whatnot, and after a few seconds I got a GNOME splash screen! Way cool! except half a second later it kicks me back to the terminal and tells me that there are no fonts, i should edit my fonts.conf, and more information can be found on fontconfig (3) man page. well, i do a man fontconfig, and it is not found. I went into a chat room and someone told me to do this:

xinit /usr/bin/kdestart -- :0

I did that, but I don't think I have kde on my system, so that didn't work.

I did the same thing for gnome-wm:

xinit /usr/bin/gnome-wm -- :0

and i got the same results as before: a splash screen, and kicked back to the terminal looking for fonts. I'm not sure what i can do...

i need some help, i guess!

If you did the "everything" install, then KDE should be there as well. It looks like your problem is that fontconfig is not installed, but that should also have been installed with the "everything" install. Something must have gone wrong during install, possibly from part of the CD being unreadable for some reason.

Then wouldn't I have got some sort of error message? I didn't get diddly! the xml script, /etc/fonts/fonts.conf was there, and it looked ok (to my noob eye). Most likely, though, you're right. This is why i don't trust ISO installs! Know of a way to install slack over ftp?
