One of the reason that made me choose it years ago as a working and learning platform, moving from debian, was because it jumped straight to version 7: I told myself "it should be fun!" :D

IMHO, fun is good for health :)

I've upgraded three boxen to 13.37 RC1......smooth as silk.
Did you upgraded via slackpkg? I was compiling kernel 2.6.37.2 from source a week ago on my 13.1. Works nice, but I see fans on my notebook need more time to go sleep after high CPU usage. Now, when is out 13.37 I started thinking about it. Maybe I will copy 13.1 on second (test) partition and I will try to upgrade, because I dont want to destroy my 13.1. It was installed as minimal install with X, and some my time created from it perfect stable Slack that I dont want to destroy.

I will buy the gold plated "collectors edition" box of Slackware 1337 if I can find one :)
Also the Slackware 1337 T-shirt would be awesome!

@Ponce: After demonstrating your 1337 designer skills with the SVG Slack-Logo, you could make us the SVG Slack-1337 logo! :D
I would definitely find someone who could make me a Slack-1337 T-shirt with it :)

"Partly so it could have a codename"? LOL How about entirely because Pat has a sense of humour.

I still remember that one of the versions 7.1 or 8.1 was codenamed Etta. So they should know the history before they write anything. Yeah and there was no _Ubuntu at that moment... :-)

Edit: it was 8.0

The slackware 13.37 set should have "The Leet Edition" written on it.

I see now that the 1337 is available in the store (preorder)
Perfect timing since i got my salary today :)

I have done these but I'm not much imaginative (maybe also because I like simple designs)
I release them here under the GPL (but for me Pat can do what he likes with this stuff ;) )

Could be that i am mistaken. Do not remember exactly where I've seen a phrase like "Slackware 8.0 codenamed "Etta" ....". Tomorrow will check if i still have a CD and look through it if will have time. Sorry for confusion if it was my mistake.

volkerdi 03-10-2011 04:20 PM

"åtta" is exactly correct, but I could easily see it getting transliterated by the media somewhere along the line.

I got my time down - see the news article HERE

:hattip:

Hehe nice, but of course now you have to do that for all RCs and the release itself ;)

"we've decided to go with the
recently released 2.6.37.3 Linux kernel which seems to work best for X"

that's a shame as most AMD users wont now be able to use much of their shiny new kit to its potential speed etc out the box/off a liveCD etc

phoronix.com /scan.php?page=news_item&px=OTE5OA
"The Linux 2.6.38 Kernel Is A Few Days Away

Posted by Michael Larabel on March 09, 2011

The Linux 2.6.38 is effectively ready for release. The condition of the kernel is quite good (hence the large just-published seven-way file-system benchmarks on a SSD and HDD) and Linus noted Monday that when releasing the 2.6.38-rc8 kernel that it could even be considered final, but as he's away for a few days, he went ahead to do one final pre-release.

The final Linux 2.6.38 kernel should be released in the near future with its Radeon HD 6000 series open-source support, AMD Fusion Linux support, ATI page-flipping, Nouveau Fermi acceleration, and many other open-source graphics improvements. This kernel to be used by Ubuntu 11.04 also has EXT4/Btrfs changes, pulls in a kernel patch that does wonders, and offers other kernel improvements. "

putting the beta on the servers and directly linking it in the news updates Current (pre-release) ChangeLog might be a good idea too if you want people to actually test it now.

guanx 03-10-2011 05:37 PM

The most impressive thing of 2.6.38 to me is that it's xen ready. The -rc8 announcement was made before slackware 13.37 so I presume Pat. knows that -rc8 is almost final.

The reason to not move to 2.6.38 might be -- It's new with zero patch level.

it seems this time around 2.6.38 and the other key components for video should get special one time consideration and inclusion ASAP given the new AMD kit support and even that "pulls in a kernel patch that does wonders" for many gfx speed up's on sandy bridge etc
see http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag..._13lines&num=1
and http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...nb_video&num=2

or theres going to be lots of "why cant i use this" or "why is video so slow when other distro can do bla bla.."

and OC Slackware 13.37 and its derivatives will gain so much more speed and compatibility with the new kit everyone just got, everone will want to use it and make lots of updated slax modules :D

And here as well :). The only trouble is that now I have been riding the slackware -current express for a couple of months I suspect I will never be happy with the release version.... Looking forward to the 2.6.38 kernel, new xfce and all the other upcoming new goodies :).
