Libraries versions

Hello,
My computer has slackware 14.1 and I compiled these 2 packets:

1) Using the sources from slackbuild.org I built the library libasyncns for slackware 14.1 and I got the following slackbuild: libasyncns-0.8-i486-2_SBo.tgz

2) Using the sources from a slackware mirror I built the library libasyncns for slackware 14.2 and I got the following slackbuild: libasyncns-0.8-i586-1.txz

they both are the same version (0.8) but I noticed the first one ends in i486 and the second one is i586... (also one is tgz and the other one is txz)

1) why the difference in the ix86 part of the name?
2) Are they both interchangeable and can be installed in a computer with slackware version 14.1 or they are have different functions???

Regards,

1) the package became rebuilt with a different ARCH compiler flag
2) I would not bet on it but it could work

seeing that you have also on other thread, I would recommend consider an update to 14.2.
this is a very good Slackware distribution, you will not regret it
and the upgrade, once everything downloaded, might be faster than playing aground with single packages and fixing porblems

1. Slackware switched to mostly i586 packages in 14.2. It just means it was built using a different compiler flag, which can lead to some optimizations. However, both i486 and i586 will work fine on pretty much any system.

2. If you built both of them on 14.1, they should be able to be installed. However, if it is replacing a stock package, you could end up with some mismatched libraries. Also, SlackBuilds on SBo are only checked with the other SlackBuilds for the version of Slackware they were submitted for. This could potentially mean that if the versions vary, other SlackBuilds may not support the newer version (although, in this case, since both are 0.8, you shouldn't see any issues with it).

I also agree with many other suggestions that it might be worth upgrading to 14.2. 14.1 will be 4 years old in November and a lot of libraries in it are quite old (for example, you can't build the latest Firefox on 14.1 because its gcc is too old).
