So, for me, I probably won't get a mastodon account, because I don't see myself using it.
I deleted my FB account in February 2019. I have not used social media for 11 months. LQ and Slackware IRC on freenode is as close as I get to social media these days. I don't miss it.

What do you use when on mobile? Surely not this forum i guess...

I do get e-mail notifications from LQ on my cellphone; and I do on occasion comment here on LQ from my cellphone. I don't have any social media applications on my phone.
I use my cellphone for calling, texting, emailing, word processing, surfing the Internet, and photography.
It would probably be easier to set up a Pleroma instance instead of a Mastodon one. Pleroma is much easier on resources (and thus cheaper for whoever's hosting the instance). It also has a larger character limit, better support for the ActivityPub standard, and it's not subject to Gargron's latest whims.
I set up a pleroma instance at https://roots.globaltree.net -- its not slackware specific; but it's running on slackware! However, I turned federating off, until I have time to blacklist everything and only allow a whitelist -- when I turned federating on, some of the feeds had content too unsuitable for my taste.
