Followed this advice, reinstalled KDE in its entirety, ran pkgtool, no change. KDE still chrashes at the splash screen with cannot connect to kdeinit4, can not open display:0.

I am beginning to believe this installation has had it unless I want to use XFCE.

Xfce does a nice job of running most KDE applications.

I run Slack64-C Multi-Lib KDE 4.5.3 on 5 boxes and all of them are updated and working perfect.

The way I did the recent updates:

Edit slackpkg blacklist:
Change
aaa_elflibs
to
# aaa_elflibs

slackpkg update
slackpkg clean-system
Installed Eric's “new” Multi-Libs
reinstalled KDE 4.5.3
slackpkg install-new
slackpkg upgrade-all
reinstall my packages
re-boot

ctrl alt f6
root login
telinit 3
cd to nvidia driver and install it.
edit the “new” inittab
nano /etc/inittab
Shutdown -r now

On the 1st box I upgraded, KDE would crash at the splash screen until I installed the nvidia driver. I think I also remember something about a kde error # 127 before installing the nvidia driver but all is well now.

did you delete the /home/youruser/.kde file. then as root go into the /tmp folder delete that users tmp file it may be stale ksocket-your-user and the kde-your-user. then type killall kdm then type kdm. let me know.

I just did one of my other machines today and I really ran into it just like you. nothing worked. I installed alien Bob's kde4.5.2 and it worked fine. I had to do a slackpkg new-config then I went and looked at the files that had been up dated and the I believe this is caused by me I have done so much with this machine like you I did not want to loose it or start over. It is back up and running box number 6 was work. I download the latest mirror and manually upgraded and reinstalled everything it still crashed until I went back to alien Bob's KDE 4.5.2 did I see the files that had not been changed during the upgrade it is up and running though.

Fluxbox works ok, so I'm afraid it's qt related. Tried fglrx, radeon and even vesa - nothing works. Reinstalling kde now, hope it helps. Definitely not boring update

Works after reinstall.

the 7.8.2 downgrade worked for me as well on my Compaq Presario V5000 series laptop (64bit). That series also used the ATI Radeon series video chipset.

In the end, I downgraded mesa to 7.8.2 and KDE came back up. Apparently, at least on my machine, mesa-7.9 borks the radeon driver and won't work with vesa either. With the downgraded mesa, the radeon driver works again. But, thanks to your advice, I have a fresh installation of KDE 4.5.1 and so the system is cleaner. I only had four or five non-native apps, so reinstalling them won't be any big deal. Thank you for following my posts and helping me solve this. I always have paid a great deal of attention whenever Xorg or mesa gets updated, but I have had such good luck in the last year or two, I failed to exercise the same caution I usually do.

I have to say, I am not fond of the new fonts.

Edit: KDE still crashes, but it runs. However, if I minimize an app, as soon as I touch the panel with the mouse cursor, it crashes. It has replicated this many times. I will just use XFCE until a future update fixes. At least the radeon driver is working now and the rendering is better.

The Mesa 7.9 upgrade definitely bombs libpthread.so.0 after upgrading all the x series of packages. Only upon finding the alternate 7.8.2 upload by pat was I able to upgrade X.org to the nifty new 1.9.2-3 version. All now appears to be well. Pass this on to anyone else experiencing trouble like this.

The fonts definitely look better in Xfce than in KDE for some reason.

This is a symptom of Desktop Effects not being supported by the graphics driver. You could try turning off the Taskbar Thumbnails effect.
Did you try the gallium radeon driver?

I have 2 computers with a Radeon 2600 Pro and an integrated 3200, both of which use the r600 mesa 3d driver. Performance decreased with the update to Mesa 7.9. Screens stuttered more; the MythTV menus were not as responsive; playing StarCraft in Wine suffered as well.

I recompiled the mesa package with --enable-gallium-r600 to give it a try, and it brought performance back up to the old snappy levels. Might be worth trying for others with r6xx-r7xx hardware.

Same problem here(ATI Technologies Inc 760G [Radeon 3000]). Downgrading to mesa-7.8.2 did not work. Then I chose to turn off the desktop effects, now KDE doesn't crash when minimizing some apps.

The font looks nicer in KDE/Qt apps(Dolphin,Konqueror,Krunner etc.), but not in some places like Kickoff, Task Manager, menu of right clicking the desktop. You can see from the following two screenshots, they have different font effect. So, what causes the difference? How to tweak the latter like the former?

Using this older mesa package on a laptop with ati x1250 get's me back in light again.
With newer it just segfaults.

wow compiz runs nice very snappy But if you still have it set to you old nvidia setting beware it will crash the kde desk top. start with a new .config/compiz config
