id "x1" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
I've just built a new Slackware 14.2 system with ASUS GEFORCE GT710-SL video card. I've downloaded and installed the NVIDIA driver.
Problem: when I do 'init 4' I get the message shown in the subject, "id "x1" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes", and no GUI desktop.
However, if as a user I run 'startx', I get the desktop just fine.
I've searched for a solution. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the NVIDIA driver, but it's not working. Any ideas on what's wrong and how to fix?

How new is your driver?
Since 14.2 is a fairly old release, there might be a conflict between the old versions of X11 software found in 14.2 and the newer driver. It might be better if you searched for a driver which supports your card and was released around the same time as 14.2.

Any idea would be a shot in the dark based on so few information. It would help to know what graphical environment is supposed to be started, what display manager you are using and what errors you get and relevant parts of /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
Also, please confirm that you did a full Slackware installation.
And provide the output of this command, typed as root:
Code:
lspci -knn|grep --A3 VGA
I wouldn't bet on X11 being too old, as then startx wouldn't work either.

14.2 is the current "official" release of Slackware. -current is in-progress. We use the production version. I await 14.3 or 15.0, whatever is next. This is also the 4th Slackware/KDE system I've installed in the past 6 months and the only one giving me this problem. I've tried several NVIDIA drivers of various ages. The current one as of this posting is 387.34 dated 2017.11.24. It does specifically list the GT710 as a supported chipset.

The system is using the AMD FX-8340 4GHz processor, Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2 motherboard and ASUS GEFORCE GT710-SL video card. Currently, I have an Acer AL1702 monitor connected, but I've tried other monitors as well. Slackware is installed fully from DVD and is up-to-date on updates. Xorg.0.log is included below.

Hmmm, the NVIDIA installation creates a blacklist file: /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-installer-disable-nouveau.conf and won't install unless nouveau is blacklisted. Also, when nouveau is disabled the boot screen fonts don't shrink during boot -- which they aren't. I'll try resetting everything back to standard Slackware and reinstalling NVIDIA driver (again).

I'm using KDE. If there it something in addition to that, I don't know what. How would I check?
Also, for the heck of it, I tried switching to a newer HPLV1911 monitor. Didn't help.
btw - startx at command prompt still works using NVIDIA. With startx and nouveau driver, the GUI progress screen hangs part-way through and the machine cannot be rebooted via 'shutdown' (must reset), which I've experienced before and which is why I use the NVIDIA driver in the first place.
Later ...
I installed a new drive and re-installed Slackware 14.2 from scratch, and did the upgrade-all. Just at this point, I can run startx AND 'init 4', both work -- without using the NVIDIA driver. So, I'm going to install the additional software (basically, PAM modules) bit-by-bit and see if/where things go awry.

I believe I've got this fixed. Here's what I did in some detail in case it might help someone in the future.
As mentioned in my previous post, I installed Slackware64 14.2 from scratch and did the upgrade-all. I did not install the NVIDIA driver. I tested by running 'startx' and 'init 4'. That worked. Next I began installing Ivandi's PAM package (this will be a domain member workstation). I notices that there were problems installing the package that perhaps I hadn't paid attention to before. So, I re-scratch-installed Slackware and installed an older PAM package which installed just fine.
I still had not installed anything other than the stock nouveau graphics driver. I tested with init 4 and rebooted/tested KDE between each enabling of samba, winbindd, etc. All seemed to work fine except there seemed to be pretty long pauses after starting things; winbindd is an example I recall.
Finally, I started autofs and the command shell completely hung. 'top' showed a kworker task for core 5 sucking up 100% of the CPU and it just stayed that way. A web tip advised doing 'echo l > /proc/sysrq-trigger' to create a backtrace viewable with dmesg. I did that and the backtrace output showed core 5 doing things with nouveau. So, I blacklisted the nouveau driver in /etc/modprope.d.
That actually fixed the problem, no more long pauses or hanging, but the GUI screen resolution was max. at 1024x768. Nevertheless no issues starting in runlevel 4. At this point I went ahead and installed the NVIDIA driver. That worked and got my screen resolution to 1280x1024. So far (24 hours), I have no problems.
My guess is that the failure of some PAM modules to install properly somehow affected X, although I can't see how. In any case, starting over and installing everything from scratch solved the problem. I'm going to give this a couple of days more to make sure.
