Question GTK+2, problems with applications that won't display fonts correctly

ok, i've got a problem that is confusing the hell out of me... every time i run an application (nmapfe, xmms, gtk-gnutella.. etc) all of the text shows up as little boxes.. i was able to fix xmms because you can change the font to something else.. for somereason the "default charset" can't be loaded or so i am led to belive.

I get the following errors when running most GTK+ applications:

03/09/10 13:36:05 (WARNING): locale_init: Using default codeset ISO-8859-1 as fallback.

Gdk-CRITICAL **: file gdkfont.c: line 634 (gdk_text_extents_wc): assertion `(xfont->min_byte1 == 0) && (xfont->max_byte1 == 0)' failed.

Gdk-CRITICAL **: file gdkfont.c: line 634 (gdk_text_extents_wc): assertion `(xfont->min_byte1 == 0) && (xfont->max_byte1 == 0)' failed.

Gdk-CRITICAL **: file gdkfont.c: line 634 (gdk_text_extents_wc): assertion `(xfont->min_byte1 == 0) && (xfont->max_byte1 == 0)' failed.

Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkwidget.c: line 1584 (gtk_widget_map): assertion `GTK_WIDGET_VISIBLE (widget) == TRUE' failed.

Could anyone shed some light on this subject?

You can change the fonts for GTK+2 apps by running gnome-font-properties, though it seems that those apps were not GTK+2 ones.
