Talking linux file system confusion

hey, i recently made the jump to pop os from windows and while i got the basic hang of things i'd like to understand more about where things are stored. a thing i liked to do on windows was check every directory now and then and clean up files that were left there by apps i installed, it might be a bit of an obsessive behavior but it keeps me sane. what i wanted to know is where do files like configs or other junk usually get stored on the drive? i noticed that most of my apps store their stuff in home, but i'd like to make sure. should i mess with anything in the root folder or is most if not all stuff stored in home? sorry for the newbie question!

See "man hier" or put "linux filesystem hierarchy standard" into a search engine.

I would like to add that unlike Windows most linux systems come with their own package management system and are way better at keeping things tidy in comparison

No.

Unless you desire an education in system recovery. Disk is cheap, leave any crud there - when you next do a full install, it will all be "pristine" again.
