I do it on a 4 core (8 thread) Nehalem Corei7 clocked at 3.2 GHz, 18 Gb RAM

With -j6 (it's actually faster for me to limit it to that because of the timing of the objects getting built), using the PGO+LTO method (where it builds, profiles, then builds again with link time optimizations) it takes me about 160 minutes these days.

Further to...
"It seems to be more of an unreasonable hysteria at this point,
feeding on people who don't understand web technology."

IMO,
exactly the same applies to the fact that firefox (and probably other browsers),
have dropped the ability to access FTP servers.

Well, actually, this matter of https is somewhat problematic and a threat to the free web. Not everyone can and/or will or even need https on their website, and in some cases it serves no purpose at all. Blocking or warning against http just threatens to split the web. And this promotion of https only is a threat to hobbyists and people with less resources and others as well.

I like https only where it serves a purpose. But http also serves a purpose, and not everything needs to be https. It seems to be more of an unreasonable hysteria at this point, feeding on people who don't understand web technology.
Today everyone can add HTTPS to their sites, because there are free/gratis methods to get SSL certificates, like is Let's Encrypt.

That's not the reason not everyone can get SSL on their website.

Does Firefox require https on connections to local servers running on localhost? If so, that really would be a triumph of superstition over reason.

I just built (from Slackware's source build) and installed Firefox 92.0. I checked under Settings, Privacy and Security, HTTPS-Only Mode. It is set to "Don’t enable HTTPS-Only Mode". I've never set this setting from the default. This setting was introduced with version 83.

I am having no issues with the few http sites I access, including my cups server at localhost:631.

Works on http://info.cern.ch - home of the first website.

I tried http://glennmcc.org/ which loads okay, http://glennmcc.dynu.com/ on the other hand give me a sever not found error, "Down for Everyone or Just Me" shows site is online. Probably because of my location. (Same thing happens with 91.1.0esr.). The site works when using FoxyProxy with tor via Germany with 92.0.

Nope. Perfectly fine browsing my localhost server using http only.

Same with http://glennmcc.org

That won't continue for much longer. HTTPS Everywhere is being phased out. By the end of this year it will be in maintenance mode for 2022.

Here's the article about it at the EFF website. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/0...lly-everywhere

Good to know, thanks. Hopefully Firefox improves the UI for their HTTPS only mode.
