php8 in 15.0 ?

Got a question for Patrick and the other Slackware developers.

php8 has been in extra for a while now. (since Feb)

Is the plan to step from php7 to php8 for the 15.0 release ?

I'm not a Slackware developer, but from what I know, the /extra directory is not a place for testing software for near future integration in the main tree. For this purpose is /testing

So, I guess that the plans are to ship PHP8 as an alternate/extra version of PHP7 from the main tree of Slackware 15.0.

In other hand, the good news is that looks like PHP8 is not considered software on testing stage, but as stable release which for various reasons is better to be offered as alternative.

I agree, it's an alternative. PHP 7.4 isn't EOL yet and it will get security support until 2022-11-28.

PHP7 -> PHP8 coming soon, many applications are already compatible.
I personally have only one application in the RC stage that is not yet compatible with PHP8.
Anyway, I've been compiling PHP from sources since I started my apprenticeship in Linux.

Anyway, looks like on Slackware 15.0 you will have both PHP7 and PHP8.

Does really matter which one is on the main tree and which one on /extra ?

In the end, I guess that the security updates for both of them will arrive on /patches ...

Quite correct that php 7.4 is not yet EOL

Active support will continue till Nov 2021
and security fixes only will continue till Nov 2022

https://www.php.net/supported-versions.php

Anyways...
Have already tested all of my own PHP scripts
and have altered all that needed it to be php8 compatible
so I'm ready-to-go when php 7.4 goes by the wayside in favor of php8
