I have noticed now, after changing the resolution and saving it - exiting xorg and then coming back in, it is not retained and this seems to happen on any WM / DE. Can anyone replicate this? I have seen this behavior on KDE4, MATE and Cinnamon right now, so I have to assume it affects all WM / DEs at this point.
FWWIW I am using a VM and I do have the VM Tools installed.

Also if this helps, I haven't completely kept up with --Current, so I downloaded all of --Current again yesterday if that means anything.
-edit2
Also the install of --Current is fresh after downloading --Current.
Can you explain how you're trying to change the screen resolution? That might help others advise more specifically. KDE uses the KScreen utility for managing displays for example, and you can configure using System Settings > Display and Monitor.

I took screenshots since I am too lazy to explain, but either way the settings just do not hold when I exit and return.
As I exit xorg and come back in the resolution is back to its original state and not what I set it as 1900x1200.
A few years since I used KDE 4, but this KDE thread indicates that ~/.kde/share/apps/kscreen/ or ~/.kde4/share/apps/kscreen (depending on your distribution) for KDE 4 is the file to investigate. Not sure why you can't make it persistent though. Perhaps kscreen isn't running?
K Menu->Computer->System Settings->System Administration->Startup and Shutdown->Service Manager. Look for a service called KScreen, and see if it is enabled.
Another common approach is just to add a desktop startup (executable script) file with the appropriate xrandr entry to set the desired display mode upon login.

Strange, but this issue as stated also does not persist in MATE either. I honestly do not know what changed in --Current to cause this, and all I can state again is that this is a clean install of --Current with all packages from Fri Jul 3.
I will try that, but I am curious if I have to do that when the next release is done. Especially in MATE since it has the option to save and save system wide - that should be enough; but clearly it does not hold as expected, and then so the question still arises will I have issues with Cinnamon and others as well .
