Most problems that I would have are of my own making. If I were to just install a given distro's packages and take what I get I'd likely never have a problem, but I've never been happy with that. I want what I want, and I want it my way :-)

Yes, the only way to learn. It's just that I've a lot on my plate at the moment and have to choose my battles.

Can you tell me more about this ?

You can attach the following log files if they are always present on your system :
Code:
/var/log/xdm.log
/var/log/xdm-xsetup._0.log (and/or /var/log/xdm-xsetup._1.log)
/var/log/xdm-xbuttons_bar._0.log (and/or /var/log/xdm-xbuttons_bar._1.log)

~/.xsession-errors._0 (and/or ~/.xsession-errors._1)
Thanks.

Very sorry Sébastien. I didn't keep the log files and I can no longer reproduce the problem. I'm pretty sure the fault was at my end, not with xdm or your additions to xdm.

I could be wrong but I think it had to do with sbotools not finding the compton source code for -current. All the other requirements, including optional requirements, were built. I didn't hang around too long to troubleshoot; I've had your theme working several times with no problems.
