Ubuntu 17 reinstall grub issues

Can someone please help? Last time I installed Ub u ntu 17 a grub menu was generated that allowed me to boot to windows or ubuntu. But this time i get a grub> prompt. I don't understand what happened. This is my third install from live cd and the other two times this didn't happen.

probably the installation was not successful. But you need to give more information. What hardware is it, what did you try to install exactly and how.

I discovered that if I type "exit" twice I can get the grub menu. I see Ubuntu, Advanced, and two memtest options. I also discovered that if I change the boot sequence in the bios I can boot to windows 7 directly bypassing the grub bootloader. I just don't understand why grub is not generating the correct boot menu. I've started searching for sample grub files that have a windows 7 boot options and ubuntu boot options so I could manually edit /etc/default/grub but I can't seem to find any working examples.

I believe we already stated as much. Do you have an example grub file that will give me windows 7 and Ubuntu menu options?

This is a PC 500gb hard drive AMD 64-bit CPU and running Windows and Linux on it for years. I just did a reinstall of Linux and now the boot menu is gone. It's really nothing special. Hopefully someone else running a PC with dual boot windiws and ubuntu will come in with their experience.

The Ubuntu 17.04/10 versions are no longer supported, use 16.04, 18.04/10. Did you do a Legacy install of Ubuntu? If you have windows 7, it probably doesn't use UEFI but Legacy so you would need to install Ubuntu Legacy. There are a number of possibilities that could be causing this problem and the info requested above would be helpful. Without that information, anyone responding will just be guessing.

This is not a good idea. I have an ubuntu, a debian a win7 and win10 and all of them are available using grub. So this is my experience and it is doable. And working for years.


What is different: you made a mistake, probably an installation had been corrupted/interrupted/failed. Therefore grub does not work. My experience will not help you anyway, because I could successfully install all of those OSs. But if you can tell us what did really happen probably someone will be able to tell you what's wrong and what should be fixed.

I would live boot and check out the partition where you installed Ubuntu. If everything is there I'd mount the partition to /mnt and bind some system resources as mentioned in the linked guide. chroot in and mount your efi partition(if your pc is efi) to /boot/efi/ then install grub. After that all that's needed is to run update-grub and reboot.
