Ubuntu 18 igb driver problem on marvell 88e1680

I'm trying to use a Watchguard firebox m440 with an ubuntu server installation. The whole installation went perfectly well, except for the 3 8-port ethernet connections which are controlled by a marvell 88e1680 chip.
his the igb driver supports these chips but unfortunattly i can't get it running.

igb: 0000:00:14.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0002)
igb: probe of 0000:00:14.0 failed with error -2

igb driver version: 5.4.0-k

lspci -v:
T00:14.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation Ethernet Connection I354 (rev 03)
Subsystem: Intel Corporation Ethernet Connection I354
Flags: fast devsel, IRQ 22
Memory at dfe20000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=128K]
I/O ports at e080 [disabled] [size=32]
Memory at dff04000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel modules: igb

I can't find anything on this matter. Nor is the kernel giving more information what is going on. Anyone has an idea on what to do?

Forgot to mention that we are trying to put somekind of linux on a Watchguard firebox M440. Watchguard itself uses the following script to load the IGB drivers for it properly: https://pastebin.com/nNE7eHPS

it gives
