That's strange, I just downloaded the driver from their download site and it installed with no problems. No warnings at all. I did notice in the README that the gt 730 was missing from the compatible list. I thought it was just a mistake by them.

Using the "IgnoreABI" setting with the 390.48 driver didn't work very well with my GTX 970. It got X to start, but I had no GLX extension and no 3D or compositing support.

I had to move to 396.24.

I checked the README in the located in the 396.24 directory of the download site. The GeForce GT 730 0F02 is listed; however, it's also listed here:

What's a legacy driver? http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_32667.html

The "Unix graphics feature deprecation schedule" link I posted above is dated 04/23/2018. Fairly resent. Of course that doesn't explain why it works for you and not for me. Really weird.

I use the 340.106 legacy driver. It does not agree with the current ABI changes. IgnoreABI leads to a black screen without further action...

But the nouveau driver works nicely.

Just for info, and have a nice day

Franz

edit:
the line addressing nouveau: without FreeCAD, unfortunately, which needs OpenGL
was my error: reinstalling xorg-server after removal of the nvidia driver made glx work flawlessly
