Freeze after logging out


Full install linux mint 18.3. All went well, update, drivers all good. When I logged out could not log in again.

192.947080 blk_update_request:critical medium error dev sdb,sector 1952151152 195.7358521
195.735916 buffer I/O error on dev sdb, logicl block 244018894, async page read

Don't know what any of this means.
turned off computer tried to log on again got more text and inimif "help"
didn't understand that either.
I reinstalled linux mint went up easy. Don't want to lose again.
Have gateway Dx4840 computer

Thank you for help.........total newbie

the logout is very likely unrelated

you had a failed install and or hardware error

you need to learn to use a "rescue disk" (not suggested here) or re-install making sure you follow advice in the install guide verbatim

the error appears to be a disk or memory error: perhaps not due to failure of the device but caused by an installation that specified "extra parameters" to the device that are impossible

another "possible" is that the hardware is not supported (see the HCL hardware compatibility list for your OS). for that Q someone else will have to answer you.

" inimif "help" ??? have no idea what your talking about

Look in the bios setup, and make sure the drive controller is set to AHCI.

Thanks for replying, sorry had not seen it until I got an email.
I reinstalled Linux Mint 18.3 again all went well then Firefox stopped say to reboot!! Down again no booting up.
Have reinstalled again(third time the luck will hold).
Also have found this. https://prognotes.net/2018/04/linux-...ramfs-prompt-a . I bookmarked hopefully will not have to try out.

Old Newbie. Can teach old dog new tricks, just takes longer.
