unable to install libjpeg

Specs:

Fedora 25
kernel:4.12.8-200.fc25.x86_64
gcc: gcc version 6.4.1 20170727 (Red Hat 6.4.1-1) (GCC)
libjpeg version: 6b

I'm trying to install libjpeg but having problems, see attached. I understand the library is old, last revision is 1998, but the mailing list shows activity as recently as 2016. I tried apt-get install but no files were available. I could try libjpeg-turbo, but it is proprietary and don't want to run into license issues if I write something useful. Any ideas with what I have?

I doubt you used "apt-get" on Fedora, because it doesn't exist for Fedora. Fedora uses "yum", so did you try typing in "yum provides libjpeg"??? Compiling something like that from source isn't something either easy or suggested...you have to install a good many dependency libraries BEFORE you can compile.

freeBSD has been "compiled from scratch" easily by any user since the 1980's. however it has pitfalls (lacks in other departments)

Linux from scratch allows it - I'm not sure LFS is prime time yet (it's not like freeBSD where you can boot from flash, run bins, and easily get and build exactly any src you want without a hitch). LFS would require "allot of reading and nursing and cut and paste from examples" last time I looked. (warning: if you change any options in any build to "add or remove something": all following builds are likely to fail. LFS and BSD work only if you use options others have pre-chosen)

for Fedora, which has benefits over the other two, I'd agree, if your trying to compile that your going up the wrong alley.

however: you use yum or I think rpm as well. you can get (or git) all the dependancies in order and do it. and as I said above: dependancies aren't "real". the whole thing depends on what options you choose: choose a different compile option you can get a whole new tree no one else has experienced before (which is fine if you want to resolve all the issues manually)

next question: why would you want to do all that?

what application are you trying to run that wasn't made to run in Fedora are you trying to get running ? perhaps your question can be better answered by Fedora users if you say why you'd want to do such a thing.

answer #2

libjpeg is already installed

if you clobbered it, try removing the package with rpm (or the package that installed libjpeg) and re-install the package (the suggested one - not just any one of your choice!). use the binary of rpm don't try the source for rpm.
