Question Mandrake 10.1(Xorg) hangs on video driver (ATI Radeon mobility 9800)

hi,

i`v installed mandrake 10.1 (for the first time) and my system hangs after 1-40 minutes when the GUI is loaded (kde). i suspected it was caused by the video card driver, so I'v installed the latest driver from ATI and now i have 3d support. Still the problem occurs.

before the system hangs , the following error is mentioned in /var/log/kernel/errors:
Oct 13 09:41:36 charlie kernel: audit(1097660462.4294966757:0): initialized
Oct 13 09:41:36 charlie kernel: usb 3-2: unable to read config index 0 descriptor/start
Oct 13 09:41:36 charlie kernel: usb 3-2: can't read configurations, error -71
Oct 13 09:41:36 charlie kernel: ip1394: eth1: IEEE-1394 IPv4 over 1394 Ethernet (fw-host0)
Oct 13 09:41:43 charlie kernel: [fglrx:firegl_addmap] *ERROR* mtrr allocation failed (-22)

the last errors always occurs before a total hang!

my video card has 256MB mem (hex 0x10000000) as mentioned in lspci -v:
...
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 4a4e (prog-if 00 [VGA])

/proc/mtrr:
reg00: base=0x00000000 ( 0MB), size=1024MB: write-back, count=1
reg01: base=0xfeda0000 (4077MB), size= 128KB: write-combining, count=1
reg02: base=0xe0000000 (3584MB), size= 1MB: write-combining, count=1
reg03: base=0xf0000000 (3840MB), size= 128MB: write-combining, count=1

i tried to alter the mtrr mapping with
$ echo 'disable=02' > /proc/mtrr
$ echo "base=0xe0000000 size=0x10000000 type=write-combining" >/proc/mtrr

but that doesn't seem to work.

Anyone have some ideas???

i'll give some extra info:

add-on 2 ;-)
i solved the mtrr problem (no error in /var/log/kernel/errors) but it still hangs
the hang happens suddenly without warning, especially when opening or moving windows or scrolling.
everything just hangs: no ssh from another machine possible! (yes, sshd is up)
no hang occurs when i use the tty1-6 (even if kde is still running (runstate 5))
i have totaly no clue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are there any errors or warnings still in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

I noticed
Code:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
HorizSync 31.5 - 60.0
VertRefresh 59-75
Option "DPMS"
in your .conf. Is this a LCD? 75 seems low vert refres, is all.

hi, thanx for the reply

Xorg.0.log only contains warnings:

(WW) fglrx(0): board is an unknown third party board, chipset is supported
(WW) fglrx(0): Only single display is connected, DesktopOption will be ignored
(WW) fglrx(0): Cannot read colourmap from VGA. Will restore with default
(WW) fglrx(0): could not detect XFree86 version (query_status=-3)
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory)

yes my screen is a laptop LCD screen (res 1680x1050)

I don't know where to go from this. I did have a similar problem a few years ago with my P-III system. It had a ASUS P3B-F motherboard, which had problems with a voltage spike to the processor. I had to solve it with by soldering a capacitor between pins A1-A3 on the processor socket. The load caused by using X and scrolling a web page was enough to cause a hard lock.

I hope that your computer isn't a victim of this problem (although easily fixed).

i don't think thats the problem; under windows and linux in text mode i have no problems with high loads.

my colleges have the same model and mandrake is just working fine there; the only difference is the video card

Shouldn't that be "noapic"? You should be able to specify that on the kernel line of your crub configuration or in the append="bla bla bla" section of your /etc/lilo.conf stanza

nolapic is one possible requirement. (This was documented by the Mandrake 9.2 erratta).

However assuming that your installation itself is otherwise fine...

also try what you did like this.

linux noapic nousb noagp nopcmcia noapm noacpi

If this works then you'll need to try again eliminating each aguement one at a time until you get the freeze again.

Then you'll have found the offending item.

vectordrake:

You can also specify this on the command line to try out the parameters. Most of the Live CD's do this as well.

No.

it's nolapic for "no local apic".
