Total Audio Failure

Hi,
I was trying to get Audacity to record the PC's audio, without success including from the speakers. and trying numerous settings. Audacity crashed at one point, and now despite a re-boot there is no audio output. (all Volumes set to max)

Trying commands from the following Web-site : All Fail.
https://appuals.com/how-to-fix-pulse...sues-in-linux/
[dave@localhost ~]$ pulseaudio -check
pulseaudio: invalid option -- 'c'
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Failed to parse command line.
[dave@localhost ~]$ pulseaudio-check
bash: pulseaudio-check: command not found
[dave@localhost ~]$ pulseaudio -k
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Failed to kill daemon: No such process
[dave@localhost ~]$ pulseaudio -D
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup failed.

I though of removing anything "pulse audio" and then re-installing, but would this be the answer ? as I am nervous of breaking something else, as ALSA and Jack seem to be involved in the audio train somewhere.

Any advice most welcome Dave P..

If you got Jack and pulse audio installed, you need to look up how to make them play nice together.

This would not happen from simply installing audacity, so you must have installed something else, too.
Yes, try to undo all that, then reboot.

And document everything, so you can show it to us if it doesn't work.
Look at some of the links in my signature to help you along.

Hi Thanks for the reply,
Audacity was already installed, I was trying to get a waveform to show, and failing. However I have found an intermittent fault on the audio output socket. Audio now works, but selecting the speaker icon in the bottom panel the two right hand channels I believe always indicated "Speaker" but now the left hand of the two indicates "FFT based equalizer output" and the right hand one indicates "Speaker" but either one does the same thing in changing both channels volume, and the sliders go beyond 100% to 150%, normally they would go to maximum at 100%, so something has changed, they go to 150% even when when the input volume is reduced to near zero.
I cannot find any settings to return this to its previous method of operation

Do you have pavucontrol (the Pulse Audio mixer) installed? It should be in the repos. It gives you much more granular control of pulse than the average volume control application.

It's OK, you just need a little time to get familiar with that mixer application.

I followed the advice from somewhere on the web to run a music player as root, then returning to user, I tried this, and clicking on the speaker in the bottom panel both the speaker sliders now had a speaker icon above them.
However taking the sliders to maximum would indicate 150%. so I left it at that, intending to have another attempt at the volume controls later. But now, hey presto, I find its all back to normal. So problem Over !!!..

All was well following shut down and re-starting the following morning. But i had tried a re-boot previously, without any effect. So I put it all down to the magic monkey that lives inside the computer.
