Question Need help installing macopix

I found this program for these things called "window sitters" or "desktop buddies" called macopix. I downloaded the archive containing all the files (http://rosegray.sakura.ne.jp/macopix/index-e.html) but I can't for the life of me figure out how to install this. It says to run the file "configure.sh" but when I open it, it just opens a text editor.
How do I do this?

UPDATE: I found a package for macopix here (https://ubuntu.pkgs.org/16.04/ubuntu...amd64.deb.html) I downloaded the .deb, installed it, and it works!

I also found the link for a Miku mascot (the ones I was mainly interesting in downloading) here (http://mokeke.sytes.net/downloads/li...Miku0.3.tar.gz).

If anyone installs this, and wants to know how to start the program, just go to /usr/games/macopix.

Thanks to everyone who tried helping me, it is greatly appreciated!

The instructions can be found through that page that you linked to ("Installation and Starting" -> "Make and Install of program").

I'm having a hard time understanding these instructions... "change directory to the created one", what does that mean? Also, the instructions given to me from the archived folder were different, it said to run "configure.sh", which like I said, doesn't work, as it opens up a text editor instead of installing the program.

Into which folder on your system did you download the archive and where did you extract the files it contains?

It's currently still in my downloads folder and the extracted files are on a folder which is also on the downloads folder.

Ok. You could build it from there, but it is a good idea to create a new folder in your home directory for manually built software. Call it sources or something like that, and then copy the extracted folder to that. What is the extracted folder called?

Ok. I moved the files to /home/sources/, now what?

Your home directory is not /home. It is e.g. /home/kodeb8 (if kodeb8 is your username on your system). You would be best moving the extracted folder to /home/kodeb8/sources (change "kodeb8" accordingly), so that the folder is e.g. /home/kodeb8/sources/macopix and all the files you extracted are in that folder. Does that make sense to you?

Yeah, that's what I did, actually. I forgot to include the (username) folder in between /home/ and /sources/, but that is how I have it set up right now. /home/myusername/sources/macopix

Great. Ok, open the terminal and enter:

Code:
cd ~/sources/macopix
(~ is interpreted as a shortcut for your home directory)

This is what the instructions meant by "change directory to the created one."

Then enter:

Code:
./configure --with-gtk2
Gtk1 is very dated. Your may even be running Gtk3, but let's see if the above Gtk2 option works as the instructions don't mention a Gtk3 option that I can see.

It seemed like it was installing for a while but then it ends with:

*** A new enough version of pkg-config was not found.
*** See http://www.freedesktop.org/software/pkgconfig/
configure: error: glib-2.x is required

Ah, now we are starting to go down the rabbit hole. Whether we can get this working is a good question, but we can try.

It won't have been "installing" by the way, just configuring, as we hadn't got to the install part yet, unless you moved ahead with the instructions (please confirm whether this was or was not the case).

To start with, which Linux distro and version are you running?

Ok. It's late here and I need to get some shut-eye. Someone else may step in with assistance, but in the meantime, search on the web for macopix ubuntu 18.04 or similar to see if anyone has already solved the issue of installing the software on bionic (also check 16.04).

Alright well, thanks for helping me so far! It is greatly appreciated! I will see what I can do from here on out; or I'll wait to see if someone else can jump in to help. Good night!
