General Desktop freeze - GPU hang

My problem started when I tried to install Ubuntu18.04: I cannot enter the installation process from DVD or stick. The GUI sticks, shows artefacts, refuses interaction and pushes me back to login screen.

My system:
Mainboard: Intel DZ87KLT-75K
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4771 CPU @ 3.50GHz
There are no additional board installed, I am using the internal GPU (i915) via HDMI, there are 32GB of ram.

The system is running since 2014 with Ubuntu14.04 and later with Ubuntu16.04 without any problem.
Now I try to upgrade to Ubuntu18.04 and suddenly I stick...

I did a lot of investigation, installed different distributions (Debian 9, SuSE 15, Arch (Antergos), ...) and have the same symptoms on all. Sometimes it is not even possible to enter the installation process of DVD or stick.

Now let's focus on Ubuntu18.04.
Removing 'splach' or 'quiet' does not change anything. The same is true for 'i915.enable=0', 'i915.enable_rc6=0', 'nouveau.modeset=0', 'plymouth.enable=0'.
The only thing that makes situation better is 'nomodeset'.
But sometimes, not always it slows down the system, opening browser or nautilus reminds me on some PowerPoint, sorry 'LibreOffice', gimmicks when switching to the next slide...

Furthermore HDMI-audio is not available.

Without 'nomodeset' I get this in /var/log/gpu-manager.log ( <ctrl><alt>F3 works ):

there was NO reason to start another thread for this, and copy-pasting is frowned upon even more.

not cool, Gimmy.

this thread should be contributed to instead.

I have also faced a "General Desktop freeze" at some point in all the years I've been using Linux.
This can have a hundred different reason, it does not mean it's the same problem as OP's.

If you really want to solve your problem:
  • do some preliminary troubleshooting and web searches
  • open a new, dedicated thread
  • show us a good problem description (see the first link in my signature) along with the results of the initial steps you've taken.

"No reason and not cool." You are right. - It was not done intentionally. Sorry !
