Since more than 40 years I do stuff in UNIX / Linux I have never ever used the "su" form. I have always used "su -".

I have always think the version without the dash should not even exist. And maybe sudo is the remedy even if I don't like sudo.

Talking At the risk of coming off as quite pedantic, this is a nit I feel compelled to pick...

Just to correct the record, the symbol in question is neither a slash nor a dash. Technically speaking, it's called a(n) "hyphen." A dash is a different symbol with its own meaning, (both in the computing world and in English,) that can be represented typographically by employing two consecutive hyphens.

Here's a quick summary/cheat-sheet:
Quote:
Hyphen -
Dash --
Slash /
Backslash \
Carry on...

In the original ASCII character set there was hyphen-minus (that's the one for command line options), but in unicode there are several.

- hyphen-minus (U+002D)

‐ hyphen (U+2010)
– en dash (U+2013)
— em dash (U+2014)
− minus sign (U+2212)
