nikgenik,

If you are using Slackware as mentioned on another of your posts, then I believe that fdisk is the preferred option.

These links should help you:
https://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Partition...titioning.html

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_R0HuobMyU

The video only shows the creation of boot and root partitions, but I am sure that you will get the general idea.

No doubt LQ members who are more familiar with Slackware can advise you in more detail.

I am not a Slacker so I don't know what you may have. Also beachboy2 offers good advice.

Could this drive be some laptop drive you are talking about?

Might boot to an up to date live media and try gparted for some addition clues.

what are you using to create partition table and what error messages are you getting. Any partitions on the hdd will have to be unmounted first.

is that trying to tell you that you are trying to create a partition with a hdd that is in use?
of course it is a no you cannot. either unmount it. or boot a usb live stick with gparted then in that create your partitions.

even a partition table is the same. the hdd cannot be in use.

I am 'a Slacker.' Your disk is formatted with either gdisk or fdisk. Run fdisk first, because it tells you to use gdisk if it finds a gpt disk.

If you have a UEFI system, I think only gdisk does that. You always need an install dvd or a live usb disk to run the box while you fart about with the disk, in case you delete yourself :-/. I Recommend a backup first though.
