[SOLVED] A "software repo/package manager" sticky?

I do like the idea, as it would be good to have the ability to edit it easily - obviously a sticky would have to be re-opened to be edited if it was closed, and after a certain period of time normal members can't edit their posts anyway.

So I guess if you're happy with a wiki article instead of a sticky, then given the benefits of a wiki page vs a sticky, a wiki article seems the way to go. So I guess it's up to you to have the final say in whether it's a sticky or wiki article - so I'll leave it to you to make the final decision.

I take it there's no way to provide a link to a wiki page in the actual forums themselves?

Let's go with the wiki for now. We can even sticky the link if needed.

While I managed to setup an account for the wiki since existing LQ accounts won't work with the wiki for some reason, and I see an option to edit existing wiki pages; How do you create a new wiki page? Because I could not see any option to do that.

BTW, when you say a link to the wiki page can be linked as a sticky; do you mean that a link to the wiki page can be put directly into one or more of the forums themselves, or would an actual thread have to be created and a link to the wiki page would go into that? I'm thinking it's the former you mean, but just thought I'd ask while I'm here.

Well I did create a wiki page, well sorta, it wouldn't let me edit the page under the "Page" tab, even though I was logged in to the wiki. But it did let me create it under the "Discussion" tab though, so I guess you're going to have to get under the "Page" tab Jeremy.

But other than that, and some [missing] formatting options, it looks good - I obviously had to make some minor changes given the different formatting options in the wiki compared to the forums though.

I'd still say there should be a link to the wiki page (once you've moved it to the right place/tab of course) in at least the Linux - Software forum though - again, for visibility purposes.

Thanks Jeremy, it displays it in the "Page" tab now with the link you provided in post #64, rather than the "Discussion" tab like it was when I tried to create it before, so I'd say it's ready now. I guess if people think more should be added, they can suggest any further edits in this thread for it.

I can't remember exactly what the error message was, but it was something to the effect of "this page has not been created or you don't have permission to create a page" - I couldn't see any option to actually create a wiki page in the same tab (the "Page" tab). But like I said, it looks good now, and as far as I can tell displays as intended. Although I couldn't figure out how to put the commands listed in one of the sections in CODE tags (or whatever the equivalent is for the wiki), or how the change the font for commands listed. Because as I said before, the formatting options are different in the wiki verses the forums. So [code] etc don't work in the wiki.

Also, is any link to it going to be put into any forums, either now, or later on?

Just a little update; I noticed I'd forgotten to change some references in the wiki article from "sticky" to "wiki article", because it obviously was originally meant to be a sticky thread. So it seems it was a good idea to go with the wiki rather than having it as a sticky. Anyway, I was able to make those minor edits without any problems. Just thought I'd let ya know Jeremy.

Also, just wondering about whether it's going to be linked in at least the Linux - Software forum once again?

If you make a short post in Linux - Software with a description and link I'll sticky it.
