Update from Friday.
I bought a new USB micro cable and rechecked with dmsg:

Code:
[ 7056.370753] usb 2-1.2: new high-speed USB device number 27 using ehci-pci

[ 7056.484484] usb 2-1.2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[ 7056.484487] usb 2-1.2: Product: Moto G (5)
[ 7056.484490] usb 2-1.2: Manufacturer: motorola
[ 7056.484493] usb 2-1.2: SerialNumber: ZY322LCCFD
But I need to unlock the phone for it to be recognised.

Gave up trying to make USB work. Using AirDroid. It's not a bad work-around.
