udated kernel, boot disk doesn't work
I recently tried to update my RH 9 kernel from 2.4.20-6 to 2.4.20-28.9, using the up2date function. The update downloaded and gave me a message that it was correctly installed.
I have RH 9 installed on hdb2, and Win XP on hda1. I can only boot linux by inserting a boot disk, I set it up this way deliberately. I don't use grub or lilo to dual-boot, it's a totally manual system: Floopy disk in drive for linux, out for Windows.
The problem is, my boot disk still boots linux into version 2.4.20-6. I used the command mkbootdisk -n 2.4.20-28.9, with a new floppy in the drive. It wrote to the floppy. When I tried to boot the new floopy, though, it went through the "loading vmlinuz......." stage, and then said:
"boot failed. please insert another disk and reboot."
In the /boot directory, there are two sets of files, one set has [filename].2.4.20-6, and the other set has [filename].2.4.20-28.9. So, it seems that the updated kernel is there, just not booting.
Do I need to make some other changes or use some other method of creating the boot disk to get the newer kernel to boot?
Thanks for any help!
Hal
