I've been using Mandrake/iva since 10.1. I missed out 2006, preferring to stick with LE 2005 until this release, & have got to say that so far it's been fine & dandy, apart from a few moments of oddness, & not being able to get Compiz to play ball for longer than 10 minutes. Given that the distribution is only just over a month old, it has to be said that it appears to be as stable as can be expected for something so new, and nothing like as easy to break as 10.1 & LE 2005 were, even after many months & updates. If the mark of a good release is ease of configuration & not having to reinstall every week or less for 6 months until you've figured out what's going to break the system ( & before anyone starts about logging & command-line, I know. It's just that that side of thing daunts me lots! That & I just haven't had the time to learn a new language recently...) then this is a fine release.

To those who say it's a dud, please remember that it is new, & will obviously have some glitches for a while.

I too was a Mandriva user up until 2007 release, I had nothing but problems with this release, having used happily every release from 9.1 I had so many problems with this 2007 release that I have abandoned Mandriva for Kubuntu 6.10 which, after a little tweaking, runs nicely.

I am a long time Fedora user on my laptop. For xmas, I got a new HP Intel duo core desktop with a SATA drive (pavilion s7600y). I tried installing Fedora,Suse,and Ubuntu, and Mandrake 2007 from the Magazine DVDs. The only one that worked was Mandriva 2007. With the exception of the mouse being misconfigured, everything works.
None of the others even come close. My biggest problem is feeling like I am abandoning an old friend.

I abandoned the install where I received the message "No madwifi support in the free version" or some such thing.

Four gigs of Mandrake and they couldn't give any wireless support when almost every other distro has the support in their 700 mb cds?

YOu could just add madwifi support yourself. Many distros do not include non free stuff on the free or gpl versions of their distros so I don't think Mandriva is alone on this one.

Absolute rubbish so many things do not work it is worse than Mandrake 7.

10.1 was the best since Mandriva it has been going downhill.

Cant understand what you mean as madwifi? My laptop does work better than anyother distro for wifi with 2007.0 There is one problem though although it remembers wifi on switch on, it fails to reinstall the ethernet when I have to use it when not in hotspots.

All other latest distro's are non user friendly wifi in this regard. Mand? has more support for cards/usb than any other.

Still problems with dvd player in 32 and 64 bit and apache php in the 64bit version.

Taking mysql out is another nuisance.

I agree, I've had no real issues, and its fast stable does what it says on the tin. I don't understand this hudge contrast of view. Is it all down to the hardware we use? If we have the right set up for mandriva we love it, if we don't we hate it?

I keep getting tempted to try another distro, but then I think why, everything seems fine here.

I'm surprised by the huge differences in opinion. I personally installed Mandriva 2007 on a couple of laptops and three desktop machines and it works perfectly.

Well, I'm constantly trying out distros. Most distros do not have any trouble with my wireless hardware and I normally have wireless up and running first boot.
I hadn't used Mandrake since 9.0 or so. Thought I would give the new 007 a whirl. I will give Mandriva another go around once I locate the necessary packages to have on hand. I cannot download or install them with Mandriva as I have no internet connection other than wireless.
Searching for packages so far has proved fruitless. Where can I download the necessary packages from? Mandriva and Sourceforge come up empty when I search Madwifi.

MANDRIVA 2007 not installing!
 

What's up guys-

I just got the linux format magazine, and it came with the free MANDRIVA-2007 dvd. When I put it in my nix box to install, nothing happens. I just get the non system disk message press any key and try again My hard drive is already
formated.

Does anybody know why it's not installing???

"Non-system disk" menas the bios is not finding anything bootable--could it be that a floppy is in the drive?

Is the BIOS set to boot from CD/DVD? If so, can you boot from some other CD or DVD?

Read other posts in this thread about the magazine version not being the latest.

Well just an update
I've just spent all day trying to make Mandriva 2007 start the x windows up.
It absolutely refuses ,even with lower resolutons and screen sizes.

I didn't want to give up but its just hopeless. Went into all sorts of areas to change the screen display and got the screen up and working but could not get it to keep that sucessful configuration.

Only positive aspect was when I did get into a command line and issue "kde" I got an error message from my SiS 630 card that "virtual screen too big for memory ,5120K needed 4096K available"

So I played with extra shared memory from 8 Meg to 16 Meg in case that helped but nothing.

By the way , the version I am having trouble with came from "Linux Magazine DVD " and it is the "Cooker" version.
