AAARG... NEWB can't log into mandrake

Sorry guys, im a newbie, just installed mandrake downloadable version, (10.1) and installed the 3 discs onto my test dummy computer. Well everything is fine and peachy as it seems, i dont have a password though
when i went through the installation i chose 'next' and didnt type anything in for username or passwords so i wouldnt have to do it every time i turned my machine on. now i cant log in at all to play with my new OS! anyone know what to do, i dont want to reinstall...but if i have to i will.

Can you log in as root? You did set a root password didn't you?
Linux is robust regarding security, the password is there for a reason.

well at least you know that mandrake will install on your system
because some don't even get that far
and you've had some practice installing it
which is good
because I think you might have to do it again
and this time when you have to set up accounts
like root and user accounts
it would pay to do so
although you can tell mandrake to automatically login
a user at start-up ( not root ! )
which will mean you only have to enter the password for that user

Nah i never set a root, i assumed putting nothing as the root would mean that would be my login info... nothing... ha.. i was thinking there would be a way to set up a new user and password via the "ms-dos prompt" like command screen. (sorry im not familiar with linux terminoligy yet) evil microsoft >

lol... well looks like my original hunch was correct. Reinstall it i will. it didn't take too long. The anticipation is killing me though

so what is the Linux "ms-dos prompt" called?

But mostly "the terminal".

Linux is jus' beautiful.

And not just streets ahead of Windows, it's in a different town altogether.

a_r_rock just boot into failsafe and then type in drakboot and then check the autologin if you failed to put a user account then you can do it here when you login automatically, that is if your root account is the only one the machine. Another thing you can do is you can just pop-in CD 1 and do whats called an upgrade, and then just uncheck everything and the you can run the account part again.
