Asking LQ for a feature specific for the Slackware Forum: ability to attach tarballs, at least for some trusty/trusted users

I understand the LQ politics about the files attached to posts.

But I think that is worth, to give to some of the Slackware Forum users the ability to attach tarballs. For example, to publish here their customized SlackBuilds or patches.

Lets say in a way where those interested and considering themselves in need for, can ask for this feature, then the mods could consider their past activity and how long they was active in this forum, to give or not this ability.

why not
create a bitbucket repo,
but source code in there
attach tarballs there, since there is a extra download for attached files,
link to it

maybe github / gitlab have something simmilar

@a4z

I can't believe what I read, sorry! What an arrogance!

Look what he did here https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...87#post5792987

He helped another user, giving him a 6K tarball right now, with his take in building php 5.6

I am pretty sure that you are proud of your bitbucket or gihub accounts, but you really believe that is need for that, just to help another user here?

I've never admined this forum software, but if I remember right, on others that I have, there wasn't any option to grant only specific users the ability to upload additional formats than others. It was either they could upload or they couldn't.

Maybe this software is different or maybe someone could mod it and add it. I don't know. Either way, I don't really have an opinion on this. A few years ago, I might've agreed, but now that I am more familiar with git and github, I would prefer everything there rather than users potentially downloading year old tarballs that have had a lot of adjustments since. Or I'd just upload the tarball to a server. But, I know everyone doesn't have github/gitlab/bitbucket or a personal server.

To post a tarball, you just need to add a .txt extension, as I did here. People seem to have the ability to work out that they need to change the filename to successfully access the contents.
Also, there is a dedicated forum for feature requests here. It is more likely to get Jeremy's direct attention.

I am aware about the current ability to still attach tarballs, with extension changed. And I used it already to add small tarballs to some posts.

That's why I considered to be a minor change what I ask, also I thought that that feature eventually could be added for specific forums and users.

Hence, my interest for the Slackware forum, not sure what utility this has for others.

While we're aware that you can rename tarball to .txt, we have no plan to officially support .tar.gz/tar.bz files. There are much better places for file hosting than LQ.
