I started getting interested in servers a number of years ago. I was then in my late 50's and didn't have the time for a "focus" on them. Once I stopped doing photography for a living I turned toward the internet just to put up a forum for photographers and then a blog and on and on. All the while I wondered about the rather magnificent manner in which a website sprung into my home and soon became interested in the nuts and bolts of how this myriad stuff got to me and my iMac.
As I started learning the iMac's command line and Terminal I found myself woefully short on knowledge so started to learn server language; as a hobby at first. I switched my internet work to a VPS and then went over the cliff of wonderment about how all this worked again.
Now I am learning servers and looking for resources to better myself and found your community. I've already gone on too long so I want to say thank you for the effort of placing this forum on the internet. I know how much work it is to run one of these. I have a ton of questions about shell and will ask them here as intelligently as I know how.
To ease your minds, this software suggested I post in the Intro section when I first joined and then again when I came here and logged in the second time. Not knowing if my first post was published the first time I posted a second time. Being "reported" puts a diminished glint on my future here for the software's lack of capacity to know I had already done so. I am 71 years old and certainly don't need any more distress. I came here from a recommendation by a man I know on the internet. I am just starting to learn CentOS and was hoping for a place I could feel at home. I certainly appreciate knowing that this may not be the place so quickly. I will move on.
I still remember when I first came on LQ forum. It took awhile to learn the ropes and to get used to the various personalities and the reasoning's behind some of the replies. I have found out that the knowledge gained, and friends I may add, is worth the time, effort, and patience, necessary to move forward and look past some of the inadvertent mistakes made through misunderstandings.
By the way, there are quite a few of folks here that are not so young and are "seasoned saints."
And, the folks that know CentOS on LQ are numerous here on LQ and the knowledge gained by their advice is worth its weight in gold.
I am 65 and not so sensitive when asking for help. Maybe it is the sunburnt thick skin.
Howdy and Welcome
Why leave?
Cuz leaving here is only shooting your self in the foot in my honest opinion.
Not a better linux help center for free on the internet. Even works on dillo and links browsers.
So you might want recheck your druthers.
PS. Not in the computer business either. Just a home retired dude who helps out once in while here.
These guys and others who like my gruff ways taught me all I know. So swallow the pride and roll like your 12 years old again, like when you trusted the world.
When I was 12. I was the largest kid in my peer group, so if they dis-respected me. Oh well.
I've calmed down since then.
First, thanks to those who maintain this forum. I have found more answers to the mysteries of Linux here than anywhere else. I recently registered to ask a question which I now feel is too trivial but that's ok. I will certainly have more questions in the future.
I am retired from a career that started with vacuum tube electronics and ended with engineering projects in computer storage media. Along the way, I had the privilege to work on some of the electronics that went to the moon inside the command module. I also worked for 'Floating Point'; one of the first massively parallel processing computer manufacturing companies. My duties as field engineer took me to magical places like Edwards AFB, CalTech, Goldstone deep space tracking site and some of the startup graphics companies that are big business in Hollywood today. I also covered Universities from San Diego to Santa Barbara.
In retirement, Linux is sort of a resource/hobby. At 76 I find the ability to look up things becomes more important as my ability to remember everything decreases.
