Introduction of Bob as a new member of the LinuxQuestions.org community
Good afternoon,
My name is Bob and I am very happy to be a new member of the LinuxQuestions.org community. I am very new to Linux.
This past May, 2020 I was fortunate to be able to install Debian 9 9.5 Stretch i386 on my Dell Inspiron 15 laptop without any difficulties. During the installation, I intentionally removed it's original Windows Vista operating system. The Linux system is working very well.
Presently, I am troubleshooting the installation of the same Debian Linux distribution on a Compaq 6000 Series computer. I have run into problems and am preparing questions for posting in the near future.
Until then, I am happy to be a community member and gaining experience working with Linux.
Distribution: openSUSE, Raspbian, Slackware. Previous: MacOS, Red Hat, Coherent, Consensys SVR4.2, Tru64, Solaris

I've run OpenSUSE and Slackware on an old Dell 1545 Inspiron /w 2GB of RAM that is labeled as being Vista-ready. Not going to set any speed records but it makes a handy remote interface to my beefier desktop system when I need to work in another room.

A decent little HP/Compaq box. HP seems to have had several variants of this model. A former co-worker used to swear by the HP desktop hardware. (He took advantage of a discount that we got from being a big corporate user of their systems.) The only thing that jumps out at me that might present themselves as problems while installing Debian on that hardware are, maybe, the Broadcom Gigabit networking chip---Debian is a little persnickety about anything that requires non-free software and/or firmware. You might need to go to 3rd-party sites for the needed software/firmware if you find that chipset inside. And then I've seen another 6000 variant that appears to have shipped with what was described as a "softmodem". Man... those bring back (bad) memories. I suspect that device will never work.

I love stories - they tell us so much that can come back to help.
So how did you come to install Debian on your laptop?
