dell 990 4 gb mem
i have installed win 7 pro 64bit and sparkylinux 64bit.
dell 980 8 gb mem
i have win 10 64bit and crunchbang++11 64bit.
my question is, can i make a image of win 7 on my 990 and use it in vbox on my 980?
how do i make the image of win 7 pro that will work on vbox?
i'v never tried this before any help would be greatly appreciated.
There is a nify thing that MS uses called HAL. If you have a store bought version of Windows then you may be able to install it. You make a system state backup and then apply to new system.
However if Dell supplied the OS then it won't be overly easy to deploy it to a VM and you can't seem to find anymore Windows 7 OEM disks either.
thanks jefro
i have the original dell windows 7 pro (service pack 1) oem cd will that work ?
just thought using an image of an already set up with my programs would be nice.
If you have an install of windows 7 it will associate the software with the hardware on the 990 which will likely be different than the 980. I would use the install CD. The install is usually licensed for one OS on one machine unless you purchased two licenses. Also, installing to a virtual machine is the same as to hardware in the eyes of microsoft and you will need a license to use it. Go to a command prompt or powershell in windows and type in license.rtf and it will show all the details, your entiri EULA.
dell optiplex's come with coa on the case. i have a cd from dell for optiplex, so installing win 7 pro isn't a problem.
i just wonted it in vbox and use Linux too. no the dell coa doesn't work in vbox , win 7 pro will install limited to 3 days . most of the time installing win 7 or 10. Doing a dell computer install the cd will pick up the motherboard micro code and install without having to enter the coa .
