The Gimp stands up a bit better relative to Irfanview, but isn't really meant to be the type program Irfanview is, and so far i haven't found a satisfactory replacement.

You may want to check out some of the batch processing capabilities provided by imagemagik, etc. Granted, it doesn't have the pretty interface that irfanview does, but it's a start, eh?

Thanks, I'll take a look at that. I'm always hoping to get that little bit closer to not missing anything about Windows.

What programs would you like to see ported to Linux?

I've been using WinXP Pro for quite a while and would love to be able to use Quicken 2007, Lotus 123, WordPerfect 11 and Jasc's Paint Shop Pro version 8. If that were possible, then I would probably dump WinXP (almost).

Also, I wish Thunderbird could directly import mail from Outlook's .pst files. Or, at least be able to import Outlook Express's .dbx files.

Lingoes, which is far better than stardict

I live to have Ligoes to ported to Linux since it has unparalled advantages comparing to stardict. Hundreds of free dictionary, advanced engine of pronunciation system, better UI...Once You try it, you would fall in love it.

I'd like to see a Linux version of Family Historian. I have got Dreamweaver 8, Fireworks 8 and Sound Rescue to work under Wine. Photoshop CS2 installed but gave an error when I tried to run it so I'd like a Linux version of Photoshop. However, I really need to give Gimp a serious look since it may do everything I need.

Some Adobe flash professional would be kinda cool. Also I'm looking forward Dungeon Digger. It's "remake" of Dungeon Keeper

I believe you can use ZFS through fuse, but its impossible to have ZFS as a kernel driver because of licensing restrictions

Yup. You might want to keep an eye on btrfs, which promises mostly the same things you get in zfs. It will take a while probably to get it stable and functional, though :p

eBook Reader

I'm using an Aspire One with Linpus Lite. Have loaded Wine. Tried loading Mobipocket. Got the app but cannot connect to the store nor can I get it to load a free book tht I downloaded from the site.

seems to me that a netbook will make a great ebook reader platform. I have no desire to make books.

I realize that nearly equivalent programs don't always get the job done, but if you have access to a Linux machine in order to try out some other software, I would recommend taking a look at:

GnuCash as a substitute for Quicken, and OpenOffice as a substitute for Lotus 1-2-3 and WP11. Also, the Gimp is probably a suitable solution for Paint Shop Pro, although I'm sure that depends on what you use it for.

I don't know if OpenOffice supports Lotus' file formats, but I do know that GnuCash supports importing from Quicken files, so you should have no problem making the switch, there.

There is very little I still need Windoze for these days.

In fact, only the occasional times I go back to racing my fleet on NFS Porsche 2000.

Cheers

I actually play NFS Underground under WINE with "Huge Success" have you tried that?

Open Office is great for the word processing function, and I use it regularly for that. Haven't used many of the other functions. I can guarantee that OO will NOT support Lotus 1-2-3 formats or macros.

So this is another plea for support for Lotus 1-2-3, of which the older versions were best....
