text files opening with LibreOffice

I'm not sure when this started happening, but lately when I open a file with a .txt file type it opens in LibreOffice calc. If I right-click on the file in the Thunar window it shows "Open with LibreOffice Calc" as the default. I have to select another program from the "Open With" drop-down menu. In System Settings (KDE) > File Associations > text > plain it shows 'Kate' as the default program. Yet it doesn't open with Kate. This may have started happening when I last upgraded LibreOffice (but not sure).

This is kind of driving me crazy. Any ideas on what's up and how to fix?

Slackware64 14.2, KDE4

15 minutes later ...

Well, this is almost beyond coincidence, but shortly after posting this question, Thunar began opening text files with Kate after weeks of opening text files with L.O. Calc. I did nothing! Perhaps Thunar is smarter than we think and read my LQ post (kidding ...).

I'll wait for this issue to reappear and experiment further. Meanwhile, is there any way to set the default opening folder in Thunar? It always defaults to $HOME. Also, is there a way fix the width of the Name/Size/Type/Date columns? I have some directories with long file names and the Name column takes up 90% of the window. I have to resize the columns each time I navigate to that directory.

try, Thunar -> properties -> drop down list -> open with -> select what to use to open it.

Tried that. On my Thunar (1.6.10). That doesn't work. The selection is blank and choosing one from the list does not save. This function must be broken.
