skype won't work on my rhel 6.0

Hello ladies and gentle men,

I have just installed skype on my rhel 6.0 for the first time and eventhough it seems to have successfully been installed and the skype icon appears on the desktop and as well on the applications but when i double click on it, it doesnt start and i also typed skype or ./skype at the terminal but it gives me the following error. Any idea how i should go about it? i first instaled skype for fedora,it didn't work then uninstalled it and installed static skype. Thank you.

[root@wi-tribe skype_static-2.2.0.25]# skype
skype: error while loading shared libraries: libXv.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

That means you're missing the libXv package. Since you're using RHEL, you can get software from their repositories...do a search, and find the package. May be xorg-x11-libXv, but RHEL support can help you. Also, you don't say whether you're using 32 or 64 bit, so you may also need the 32bit compatibility packages.

Have you contacted RedHat support, since you're paying for it with your RHEL subscription?

Thanks for replying. Well i'm using 64 bit desktop version of rhel. I have not contacted Red Hat because i'm paying for just self support which is just for updates and also to use their repositories and install softwares. So how do i use the yum command to install or update libXv package? thanks

Read the man page for yum, or check one of your other threads, where you were told how to do it. It's "yum install <package name>". You may have to search for the correct package name. Again, either read the man page for yum, or check RHEL's website/contact them for support, and they can tell you which package you need.

Finally i got my skype to work by doing "yum install libXv.so.1" at first i got bunch of dependencies, so i did the same to the last dependency i.e "yum install {last dependency}", it narrowed the dependencies to very few and repeated the same step untill there was no dependency and my skype now works except that my mic isn't working now but i'm closing this thread and open a new one for the mic thing. Thanks all.
