Is it possible to limit the volume from going over 100% in AlsaMixer? Or other method? As seen in the attached image, my alsamixer volume is 115%, in VLC it's 100% in pavucontrol and the system tray volume icon seems to be 115% also. Having the volume over 100% causes some videos to sound awful.
in your statement you acknowledge that it is only with "some" video's. Now you have to figure out how to get past that cap you put on it when you get the video that does not meet the it sounds awful when it is over 100 % criteria and actually needs to be set above 100 percent to hear it. Now causing you issues in that area of not being able to get an acceptable volume due to the settings being limited to 100.
from what I just researched I have not found a means to cap pulseaudio volume at 100 % because that is what it will take to do so because you're using pulseaudio along with alsa that allows the user to go over the 100 percent volume.
pulseaudio would then be contradicting itself if it was to allow someone to disable and not allow it to go above the max volume settings that alsa limits the user to go to that pulseaudio now allows the user to go above it.
Perhaps that is why the programmers did not provided a noticeable means if any to put a limit to the max volume it is able to achieve being to set it to the max volume alsa allows.
Because it would be setting itself up to defeat itself in the arena of attainable volume being no better then what alsa can provide.
You (might) then have to look into VLC to see if it provides any means to limit its max volume settings.
If I go over 100% in the VLC volume bar, the volume stays over 100% in alsamixer. When I bring the volume back down to 100% in the VLC volume bar - the volume remains over 100% in alsamixer.
ASLA only goes to 100.
pulseaudio pushes it past the 100 % threshold.
pavucontrol is just a means to get to pulseaudio.
VLC utilizes whatever it is given as a source to control the sound.
Logic then sates.
Removing pulseaudio will take away VLC's ability to go past what alsa is limited to.
but stripping out pulseaudio in some Linux Distros can become a job to get your alsa working. Depending on how thsy have it set up.
