Openshot/Kdenlive won't load videos

I have installed both Openshot and Kdenlive at different times and neither one will load any videos. I tried the drag n drop and Openshot (2.3.3) freezes up and Kdenlive just does nothing. The old version of Openshot doesn't have any problems. Clearly I've missed something, but since I'm getting no error message or anything else, I don't have a clue. Didn't install something they needed?

With such little info hard to help. Did you build them or just install them.? Run them from terminal look for the output. Open terminal and type kdenlive then press enter

Totally agree--what I did was so routine I didn't even know what question to ask. Thought I'd take a chance.

Here's the story:
I have 2 laptops, the older one is for testing and if I like the software I install on the brand new one. Installed LM18.1 on both machines about a month ago. I have some video projects I would like to do, never done VE before, decided to try Openshot or Kdenlive. I almost always use SPM to do installs, dependencies included. Started with OS (looked easier). Version 1.4.3 worked fine, so installed the upgrade to 2.3.3. I have a small screen and don't want to clutter it up too much so instead of downloading from their website, I did this instead:

sudo add-apt-repository ppapenshot.developers/libopenshot-daily
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install openshot-qt
OS2.3.3 isn't in the SPM.

So far so good. Except it doesn't work. Can't drag n drop into the window, nothing that I tried gets into the window. Everything I tried in v1.4.3 went into the window without issue.

Then I uninstalled v1.4.3 in case it was interfering with v2.3.3. Didn't help.

So, I got curious and installed Kdenlive 4:15.12. Same problem. Since that was the older machine, I did the same thing on the new on, no difference. Neither KL4:15 or OS2.3.3 will work. OS1.4.3 works fine.

The libopenshot PPA which you used describes itself as "Highly unstable" and "Only intended for testers".

An alternative source of Openshot would be https://launchpad.net/~openshot.deve...ive/ubuntu/ppa

I would suspect that Kdenlive may not be working because your installation of openshot-qt and its dependencies from that PPA may have broken something.

If I were you, I would revert to the last system image/backup you made before installing openshot-qt.

Very interesting, spent several hours reading about the OS and no one ever mentioned that. Since OS and KL were never installed at the same time, don't see how they would conflict? Checked SPM and there is nothing broken. Starting to look like I should just use OS1.4.3 and not worry about the upgrade.

Managed to solve my problem with KL. I now have more (different) questions. Especially about the SPM. But, I'll have to do some homework on that, make a list and then post. Pretty sure that's a separate one. For now I'm calling this solved. Ended up with a compromise and that's just fine by me.
