after playing with linux for a couple weeks theres are the problems i can't seem to resolve on my own. i'll start with what i would guess to be the easiest.

im trying to mount a USB flash memory device. the following is the output from the mount command.

[iemerick@localhost glib2.2]$ mount
/dev/hdd2 on / type ext3 (rw)
none on /proc type proc (rw)
usbdevfs on /proc/bus/usb type usbdevfs (rw)
/dev/hdd1 on /boot type ext3 (rw)
none on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620)
none on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)

I see that linux has recognized it as a device but am not sure what to do with it from this point.




my second brick wall seems like it should be easy to solve but the answer evades me.
upon attempting to install xmms it errors out and tells me glib1.2.2 isnt installed. i downloaded glib2.2 and installed it. attempting to install xmms again it gives me the same error. i have installed glib2.2 with no --pre paths, with a --pre path of /usr/local, and with a --pre path of /usr/local/glib2.2. xmms still does not recognize it as being installed. i did a where is on glib and it returned a path of /usr/local/glib2.2 so i added that to my $PATH environment variable. i also added /usr/local/glib2.2/bin and /usr/local/glib2.2/lib to my $PATH variable and i still recieve the same error during the xmms install. The following is the error displayed by the xmms ./configure.

*** The glib-config script installed by GLIB could not be found
*** If GLIB was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in
*** your path, or set the GLIB_CONFIG environment variable to the
*** full path to glib-config.

a locate on glib-config returns no results
an echo on $GLIB_CONFIG also returns no results





my third brick was is really more like a large black hole. im trying to figure out how to run dual monitors in linux. im currently using an AGP Geforce2 GTS and a PCI S3 Trio64.
I'm not sure exactly why (apparently by design of the S3 Trio64) but to run dual monitors in windows the BIOS has to be set to look to the PCI bus (the S3 Trio64) first.
I know i cant hope for an easy answer on this one but any added info would help out. So far i've heard mention of a module called xinema that enables dual monitors. I've also read that you cant run two Xservers and am wondering if that means you can only run dual monitors with a dual head card and not with two different video cards as i am trying to do. I figure worst case scenario its not possible and best case scenario all it takes is a few changes to XF86Config. Again i dont expect an easy answer for this one but if someone could give me a starting point it would be much appreciated.

1) USB Memory Key
a) As root, create a directory called /mnt/usb
b)Edit your /etc/fstab, adding the line:
Now, to use the device, simply insert it, and type "mount /mnt/usb"

2) XMMS
I assume you are compiling from source.
If you have Debian, type "apt-get install xmms" as root, and it will automatically download and install xmms and all dependencies for you.
If you have an RPM based system (RedHat, Mandrake, or SuSE), download and install "apt4rpm" then you can run "apt-get install xmms" to install XMMS.
