hi im not sure if this will help your probs, but i run debian and simply mepis and in mepis i could not get dvd to play. i did the following and hey presto everthing was as it should be
downloaded libdvdread3 using kpackage
open konsole
su
password
then type in this
/usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/examples/install-css.sh
as i say it worked for me
