I got ubuntu 8.04 and when I reinstalled Gimp, I get the following error message:


It appears that you are using GIMP for the first time. GIMP will now create a folder named '/root/.gimp-2.4' and copy some files to it.

What must I do?

From the error message it looks like some files are missing. I run the same version of Ubuntu, and I have gimp installed. This file does exist for me.
I checked to see what package owns this file using the dpkg command:
This command told me that the specified file is owned by the package "gimp-data". Maybe you don't have this package installed?

If you don't have this installed, it's weird - your package manager should pull it in automatically when you install the main gimp package. How did you install gimp?

Oh, once we've got the problem sorted out, I have a short lecture for you about running as root. Remind me later.

That's probably the root (pun intended) of the problem: as you shouldn't run the setup as root in this fashion of course there is no gimp directory in /root.

The package manager should be able to install a new version of gimp if you run the package manager providing your user password when prompted instead of becoming root; or in other words:

You might want to add the --reinstall option if your previous gimp needs replacing.

Hi, Matt... Nice talking to you again. First off, gimp-data is installed. Secondly, I am now able to run Gimp from the menu. However, when I do run it, I get this error message:

Failed to open file '/etc/gimp/2.0/controllerrc': open() failed: No such file or directory

FInally, when I do try to snap a screenshot of my desktop through File > Acquire > Screenshot, the whole program closes.

Does /etc/gimp/2.0/controllerrc exist?

If you find that some of the files are missing, you might want to verify all the files in the gimp-data package. ou can do that like this (in a terminal):

If there is no output, then there are no missing files in the gimp-data package. You might also want to do this just to verify that the file which is not found is in fact owned by this package:
One last thing, just to see if we are using the same version of the packages - please post the output of this command:
