For some reason when I try to install packages I get file not found. I had slackware on another computer but it died of old age so I'm installing it on my new one. I can't imagine what could have gone wrong during the installation because it's pretty straightforward. If I have to I'll reinstall but I'd rather not.

Hi again. I installed slackware again after running into several problems. The install went fine. I read the post installation guide, added my user, selected a mirror and ran slackpkg update gpg and slackpkg update. Everything went well. But when I try to install a package I get I don't know what I could have missed since I've gone over several docs and nothing is mentioned.

where are you trying to pull from? make sure it is mounted completely. If using automount. open a file manager then click into it to complete the mounting process. if you're mounting whatever medium that way. then try it...

I'm lost. I'm just trying to install from my hard drive. This may sound stupid but someone posted that my computer may be too new for slack. Is that possible?

edit: I tried using locate but I got an error about the database not being found. I used to think I was smart until I started using linux.

you've always been patient but if it's going to be this hard to just install packages then maybe slack isn't the distro for me. Thanks for the help. I'll just have to figure out what to do next. Debian has been my good reliable friend. Maybe I'll just stick to it for now.

Yes and it was a straight uneventful install. I ran updatedb and after it finished I ran locate again and it just went back to the prompt so It must not be installed. So why doesn't it find it on the mirror when I go to install? I've read the docs on installing and updating and removing packages and it's pretty straight forward.

after you do a full install there is nothing left to install --> move to -> post install then do what is applicable to you and what you want and or need to do.

what are you trying to install and the exact commands you are using and the exact output?

copy paste off of terminal to post using code blocks would help a lot.

1. Install Full
2. update system -> via post install instructions
3. install SBo - via slackBuilds.org or one of the other tools out there to install more stuff onto Slackware.
ie
sbotools
sbopkg
slackpkg

or whatever else it out there.

If they're already installed then I guess I can't get touchscreen working because I was told to install two packages. And I needed terminator so I found a site to download the package and it's dependency and installed them. Now I have to install chromium. Terminator, Chromium and touchscreen are what I need to make me h appy.

But I have another problem. Every time I boot I have to change my user pwd because it won't accept it. And it's not like I forget it.

So this title should really read something like "help in getting touch screen working in Slackware" so then everyone would know what is really going on, and posted in the Slackware area.

just telling about it and not showing your work is not helpful either. Again copy paste commands ran and output .. if you have slack installed and are in slack It already has an array of terminal emulators to pick from to use. so I see no need to install one. as well as you need one to install one. so it already comes with more than one installed, unless one knows how to work off the tty terminal.

why do you need terminator specifically to get whatever packages installed to get your touch screen working?

xterm will even work in getting packages installed.

bsth123, it sounds to me like you are treating slackpkg like apt or yum. It's hard to say for sure, because you still haven't provided the actual commands you are running.

In order to install libinput (or any package not included on the Slackware install disc), you must have a package to install. This is different from, for instance, apt on Debian. With that, you just type 'apt install libinput' and apt goes out to the Internet, finds libinput, and installs it for you.

On Slackware, you have to go out to the Internet and find libinput, and then install it.

The most common way to do this is to go to http://slackbuilds.org and search for build script that will create a libinput package for you. You find it: https://slackbuilds.org/repository/1...ries/libinput/

Since this is a SlackBuild, you must download the SlackBuild and the libinput source code, and then run the build script. After running the script, you can install the package it creates. This is detailed here: https://slackbuilds.org/howto/

There are other tools available to make the SlackBuilds.org a little more apt- or yum-like. Some have been mentioned by BW-userx:

sbopkg is a lot like aptitude on Debian, or Ports on BSD.
sport is a lot like Ports on BSD.
sbotools is a lot like Ports on BSD.
slackpkg+ is like apt or pkg on BSD.

They all require configuration before using, so read their docs.

comments for both of you. I understand a lot more about installing packages in slackware now that I installed chrome. I also learned a lot from installing terminator. The reason I wanted terminator so badly is the copy and paste EASY abilities since I need my MAC address for wireless which is all I have left. No minor task but I've read the doc and it seems pretty straight forward. I had posted in my other thread that it appeared that touchscreen was working on my desktop but when I launched firefox I couldn't scroll. From what I've read in the past it recommends using firefox instead of chrome for touchscreen but now that I'm in chrome it works. I'll post what I can. So I basically have an up and running slackware and a much greater insight of how it works. And no it wasn't just about touchscreen. It was about learning how to install packages because nothing I was trying would work and now I know why. Thanks to both of you. I'll mark this as solved.
