Hi. What I'm looking for is a way to do encrypted instant messaging between a Gnu/Linux computer and an Android device, and only using FOSS. On the Gnu/Linux side, I'm happy with Pidgin + pidgin-encrypt plugin. But apparently there is no Pidgin port for Android yet. (There is a libpurple port, but no actual user interface.)
Perhaps, does anybody know of an encryption capable IM client that runs on both platforms? Or two clients that could do interopable encryption in some way?
I've started using Tox. It seems to be everything I was looking for, in terms of features and licensing. My only complaint is that the bandwidth usage is pretty high — 5-10 kBps constantly, which is a lot if you leave it on 24-7.
Yes, it shouldn't be transmitting anything "constantly." Data plans are expensive, as are batteries (if you can change the batteries at all).
The bugaboo is always "notification." If there's no centralized server to "push" notifications to you, you have to poll. I'd like to see a button that I would have to click to query for any new messages.

Yeah, or a way to adjust the frequency of polling. I was going to submit a bug report but saw that there was already a 40 page bug report discussion on this issue.
