In Fedora Core 4, I have a problem starting X, when I boot the kernel with framebuffer.

I changed my kernel-line in grub.conf, I appended 'vga=795' to the end of the line, to he pty in 1280 x 1024 mode.

when I log in, and then try to start X, the screen goes blank, and the system freezes.

When I DON'T boot in Framebuffer mode (leave the 'vga=' parameter out), log in and THEN start X, everything works fine.

What I'd like to have: Booting in Framebuffer, and be able to start X.

I've installed the latest nVidia drivers, and SE-Lix is disabled.

The NVIDIA driver docs address this issue. If I remember correctly, if Riva FB support is compiled into the kernel, then you can haave this problem.

Check the readme that came with the driver. You will probably need to recomile the kernel without Riva FB support.

hmm i recompiled my kernel with nvidiafb (instead of rivafb) but it doesn't work either...

what are your horizontal and vertical screen resolutions also how many bit color depth does your screen support

Both nvidiafb and rivafb make using the binary nvidia X driver impossible, as far as I know. You could use vesafb instead: video=vesafb:1280x1024@60 or whatever. Read the fb docs in the kernel documentation.

Just to add that I was using vesafb-tng and having X/framebuffer clashes when hibernating. Switching to plain old vesafb fixed the issue & allowed both the framebuffer and X to work flawlessly

Problem solved!

I compiled my Kernel with FB_NVIDIA, instead of FB_RIVA.

After installing the Kernel, and after that the nVidia driver, everything works perfectly!
Maybe something went wrong, at the first time I installed the nVidia drivers...

Don't know for sure though.
