I have downloaded the latest MySQL version (mysql-standard-5.0.26-linux-i686.tar.gz) and tried to install it in a Mandrakelinux 10.1 PC.
I had the tarball decompressed in /usr/local/mysql and executed the following commands:
Quote:
#scripts/mysql_install_db --user=billy
#bin/mysqld_safe --user=billy
|
Of which the second one prompted:
Quote:
Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /usr/local/mysql/data
STOPPING server from pid file /usr/local/mysql/data/localhost.pid
061013 20:12:42 mysqld ended
|
Although I changed the folder's owner from root to billy, here's what happened whenever I try to start MySQL:
Quote:
# /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqladmin start
|
This one prompts:
Quote:
#/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/tmp/mysql.sock' exists!

What do I have to do to start it?
